Interiors - what interiors trends do you need to know this year?
Ever since the start of the pandemic our homes have had to become much more multi-functional. Aside from being a comfortable living environment, the spaces in which we live have also had to perform as offices, schools, play environments and rest and wellness bubbles too. This has forced many of us to rethink the way we approach our interiors and is defining some of the biggest interiors trends for 2022.
First of all, what do you need to let go of this year?
The most significant interiors trend on its way out in 2022 is minimalism, specifically all-white minimalism. This could potentially be due to the increasing desire many of us have felt for comfort over the past year, as well as the wear and tear resulting from homes simply being more occupied. So, out go the empty surfaces and clean lines and in comes a more colourful and textural approach.
2022 top interiors trends
- Warming up to earthy colours. Brown is one shade that hasn't had a lot of previous airtime but is already a big interiors trend for this year. From dark chocolate brown through to lighter tones of sand and milky coffee shades we're going to see everything, from furnishings to furniture in these natural hues.
- Bringing the outdoors in. Again, the inspiration of being stuck inside periodically over the past two years is driving the desire for more elements of the outdoors inside, creating a trend for nature-inspired pieces and textures. That could be driftwood that you've collected and used to make shelves or something like a walnut wood countertop. Natural tones and textures bring warmth to interiors and remind us of what's available just outside the door. This trend is defined by the raw and the imperfect - rough edges and unfinished aesthetics are now the preference over symmetry and perfection.
- A more integrated approach to technology. This trend isn't so much about smart homes as interiors that integrate and emphasise tech and the beauty that some tech features can bring. Dyson, Bose, Apple and Smeg are just some of the brands leading this interiors trend.
- Curves. Continuing the lean towards softness, interiors aesthetics are much more along curved lines for 2022. Think sculptural furniture and gracious, sensual shapes, as opposed to right angles and straight lines. Depth is another way in which this luxurious trend is going to make an impact - deep seats and plush, comfy furniture experiences are where it's at this year.
- Rooms that do more than one thing. Multi-purpose spaces are one of the biggest trends for interiors this year and there are no secrets about where this trend has emerged from. Living spaces that double as wellness areas and dining rooms that can be conference rooms, we all want more from our homes these days and reshaping interiors can help make that happen.
