Co-sharing rooms lets
Renting in London can be an expensive business - and the costs for tenants just keep on rising. In April 2019, it was 1.9% more expensive to rent in London than during the same period the year before. The average rent in the capital is now £1,617 a month. That figure is more than 70% higher than the rest of the UK - and that's before you take into account the cost of choosing to rent in Hackney, Shoreditch, Chelsea, Hampstead or one of London's other up and coming or premium areas. However, you don't have to be fabulously wealthy to be able to meet the monthly rents here - if the cost of a 1 or 2 bed flat makes you cringe there is another way.
Co-sharing room lets
At Storeys we recognise that renting in London can be pretty pricey and so we don't just specialise in lettings that involve a whole property. We also work with landlords to let rooms in flatshares - co-sharing room lets. Paying per room, as opposed to for the entire property, has a lot of perks and these aren't just limited to the lower rent. If you're considering co-sharing room lets there are some great advantages, including:
- The social aspect. Whether you've just moved to London or you're looking to expand your circle of friends, co-sharing room lets are a great opportunity to meet new people and make new connections.
- Lower costs - for everything. Yes, you'll pay less rent when you're letting a room as opposed to an entire flat or house to yourself. However, that's not the only cost saving to be made. All other expenses will be shared too, from the monthly cost of the internet to utilities such as electricity and gas.
- Live somewhere you've always dreamed of. Whether the vibrancy of Hackney appeals most to you, or the famous faces of Islington, you'll have a much better chance of living exactly where your heart desires with co-sharing room lets thanks to the more affordable nature of renting a room.
- Enjoy a bigger/better property. You may not be able to afford a whole house in De Beauvoir Town with a beautiful garden and stylish kitchen extension on your own budget. However, if you're co-sharing then you'll have access to properties that meet many of your dream criteria at a fraction of the price you'd pay to have the place all to yourself.
What you'll need
If co-sharing room lets sound appealing then you'll need to have:
- A deposit. Most landlords will ask for a room deposit of around 4 weeks rent for one room - this total will be much less than you'll need for an entire property.
- References from a previous landlord. This can be useful when it comes to convincing the landlord you'll be a great tenant.
- Time to do an interview. In many shared houses, the existing tenants will want to sit down and have a chat before you sign anything.
- The right to rent. Anyone whose name is going on a tenancy agreement in the UK needs to have the legal right to rent.
We are letting agents in Hackney, Shoreditch and Islington with lots of co-sharing room lets - we can help you to find the perfect one for you.
